On a cold Tuesday morning last December, Dr. Avin Gupta, a local pediatric dentist, made the decision to come to the Emergency Department at Milton District Hospital. He was coughing, wheezing and he couldn’t catch his breath. He was reluctant to come to the hospital but he made the decision to come to the Emergency Department because he felt like he was deteriorating quickly. Once he arrived, he was immediately seen by a triage nurse and was called in to see a doctor less than ten minutes later. The physician quickly diagnosed him with the flu which was causing his asthma to accelerate. Avin was given a steroid and an inhaler with a tube to help with his breathing. He says, “Every staff member I encountered was polite, kind and empathetic. I felt like they genuinely cared about me. This makes a big difference, especially when you are sick.” He says that as a health care professional, he is constantly striving for the level of efficiency that he experienced at Milton District Hospital. He says “I could take lessons from this whole experience. Not one thing could have been better. It was impressive.”
